Holidays

I know the site has been slow these past few days; which can be attributed to the fact that with the holidays we haven't had games or actually spoken to each other in a couple of days since everybody's spending time with their families. Hence I have to come up with interesting material for you guys in the meantime (not complaining). So the DVD story is gaining some momentum and people seem to like it which is cool; but there should be more updates starting next week considering we have games on january 5th and 6th.

In the meantime, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

DVD Got Game Chapter 5: A new challenge

DVD was living a great life. He had graduated from high school and had bagged several ladies all the while doing his own thing without having any obligations towards anybody; he was living the life of a teenager who was about to become a man. He had fully taken advantage of his summer and was ready to embark on a new challenge.....College.

DVD made it to Bishop University a week early in order to get acclimated to his surroundings. He met several people who immediately recognized him and claimed he would be the one to bring the school to heights never previously enjoyed.

2 weeks later, DVD was at practice meeting his new teammates. The frontcourt players were feeling him and showed him some love whereas the backourt players were distant and disrespectful since they figured he would be replacing them. DVD still tried to be cool about it and be cordial but they weren't having it. One of the frontcourt players, told him not to worry about it and that they would eventually become cool with him once they saw he was all about the team. In the meantime, several Canadian and American channels such as CBC, CTV, TSN and ESPN had approached the school to follow the team throughout their season. The coach refused but the school's dean was more then happy to pass on the obligation onto the head coach as he figured it would bring a great spotlight on the school.

Once the team learned of this development, the backourt players went out of their way to make DVD look bad during practices. For instance they would call out plays during practice scrimmages that were no longer in the playbook in order to make DVD seem dumb and uncoachable. One of the bench players approached DVD and offered to help him with this dilemma.
Player: Listen, I see what they be doing to you to make you look bad and it ain't cool; I think i can help.

DVD: We've been practicing for a few days, but you never mentioned your name; what is it?

Player: My boys usually call me Shyne, and by the way we from the same hometown gawd

DVD: Word. Good to know, but why you wanna help me out though and how??

Shyne: Simple. If you look good, we all look good. But if you look great, we all look great and we win. But to tell you the truth, it's more about pride; hometown Montreal gotta look good baby!!

DVD: Aight, cool.....so how you gonna help Shyne?

Shyne: Simple. I'll teach you all the plays from last year and I'll help you get a feel for all the guys on the team. That way you'll know all of our strenghts and all of our weaknesses.

DVD: Good looking out man, let's do this then.

Shyne proceeded within a day to teach DVD the old playbook and the new one as well for good measure. He was then able to give DVD a detailed scouting report of all the guys on the team. The following practice, with the cameras rolling and everyone anticipating DVD looking bad on the court once again, DVD proceeded to dazzle all those present, even his own teammates; Shyne included. Cid had taught DVD to be receptive to change and to always pay attention and listen to good advice. And boy did it show; DVD set up his teammates for countless baskets not shooting once, even waiting for his guys on fast break opportunities. The backourt players had seen his talent and could no longer continue their childish games with him; they decided to incorporate him into the offense and make him the focal point during practice. DVD then went on to score, score, score and score some more, not missing one shot during the scrimmage.The practice ended and the coach vacated the gym but the players decided to hold a final team huddle. With the cameras still rolling, the players unanimously decided then and there to make the young freshman the team captain for his impeccable leadership. A new team was born.....

DVD Got Game Chapter 4: A new season

As the month of September rolled around, DVD went back to school and hit training camp with a new found swagger. He was determined to make his teammates look better and pour confidence into them. DVD had primaraly played shooting guard but once his head coach saw the improvement in his game, he decided to move him to the point where he flourished. The exact same team from the previous year had now become a dominant team within the province. As the team kept winning, DVD kept receiving invitations to attend universities and coaches kept calling his celly hoping to get him to commit to their respective schools. However, one door opened that no one had anticipated......the big leagues came calling ( this was before the NBA passed their one year college rule.

As the season came winding down and DVD's team lost in the provincial semis ( equivalent of state semi-finals for our south of the border friends). With the NCAA tournament ending the following week, schools started offering some crazy stuff to "secure DVD's services". OSU offered a BMW, FSU offered an SUV and MU offered groupie love. Agents started calling hoping to get the kid to the league and cash in on his fame and talent. The funny thing though, only a handful of canadian universities came calling; reason being is they figured they had no shot to actually get him to play for them. However amidst all this hoopla, DVD had one main concern; he wanted to be just one of the guys, he wasn't feeling the idea of being a savior or mega star wherever he went because it would overshadow his teammates and they wouldn't play hard with him because he would get all the glory. DVD figured he needed a college education regardless, so he knew he would enroll into a university. DVD's choice would come down to which coach would ride him hard; he figured that a tough coach would make him play hard, improve and place the emphasis on the team.

On a saturday night, a very prominent NCAA coach from North Carolina came to see DVD and promised him playing time, an education and the possibility to be the #1 overal pick in the draft within a few years. The follwing day, DVD got a visit from the coach of the Bishop men's basketball team ( located in Sherbrooke, Quebec,Canada). He offered a scholarship. DVD said: "What else?"
Coach: That's it son, take it or leave; everybody's been kissing your ass from what I know, you don't need someone else to add to that list.

DVD immediately accepted the coach's offer and was ready to start a new chapter in his life.....

DVD: So what's the other issue you wanted to discuss with me Cid?

Cid: I noticed that you've been hanging with some young lookin chicks who might not necessarily have your best interest at heart, you know gold diggers.

DVD: Naw, they my peeps man, they straight.

Cid: Naw they ain't. That chick you been hanging with that you brought here last time, she's been hooking up with this dude I know. He been hitting it on the regular.

DVD: Word??

Cid: Yup. I took the liberty of inviting him so he could tell you himself. Make sure you pay attention to what he has to say, cuz he usually knows what he's talking about......especially when it comes to chicks.

While they're talking. this light skin dude with braids, baggy pants, Air Force One's and a Sean John t-shirt enters the gym.

Cid: Yo DVD, this is the dude I was talking to you about, his name is Qwest.

DVD: wassup

Qwest: What it do cousin. I'll cut straight to the chase; the chicks you been banging are hot and all, but they bad for you man. They only got money on their mind and they trying to wait for you to make it to the top and then try and pimp you. You ready for me to drop some knowledge on you?

DVD: Bring it on....

Qwest: There are several reasons you'll never make it out of Montreal. With all the stuff you got going on in your life, your grades are bound to suffer.

DVD: I'm smart I'll manage

Qwest: The dudes that claim to be your homeboys will start hating on you and saying weird stuff like you done changed and that you think you big time now. They'll say you don't roll with them no more and that you should come hang out more and try stuff with them like gangbangs, Angel Dust, Coke, Heroin, Speed, Ecstasy just to name a few.

DVD: I don't touch none of those

Qwest: You will if you keep hanging with some of those dudes, start cutting off dudes now. If you want to know how to separate your true boys, look at the ones that never ask for nothing and the ones that are to eager to do stuff for you. The ones that don't ask and haven't changed are good peoples, the ones that all of sudden noticed you're important are "stay aways".

DVD: Cool. Anything else?

Qwest:Yeah, let me introduce you to some girls. Forget all the ones you've met. You need to roll with some older chicks that have no expectations and don't really know who you are. Cuz you were popular before the summer, imagine when you go back to school in fall and your game is off the charts.

DVD: You going to pick my chicks for me??? That don't sound right Qwest.

Qwest: I won't pick them, I'll show some here and there and you decide out of a certain group which ones you like and YOU make it happen. IF you need the hook up, I'll make it happen, if not you can make it happen yourself. Coo?

DVD: I'm feeling this. Cid vouched for you, so I trust you. I know he'd never put me in harms way.

Cid: It's a wrap. Cid, DVD and Qwest as a crew.

Once that meeting happened, DVD became large in the city. His game was off the charts on and off the court. That summer was officially termed "The Light Skin Assassin Summer". DVD and Qwest kept the city on lock......keep in mind this was before MySpace and Facebook.......

DVD Got Game Chapter 2: The name

Young Grimo makes it to Y and meets up with Cid. Cid helps him out with his handle, shooting, defensive stance, keeping his head in the game and knowing when to go for a blocked shot. Young Grimo is thrilled with the workout and feels he has learned a lot. They make it a weekly occurrence and decide to meet on each friday for that whole summer. During one of their weekly sessions,Young Grimo tells Cid:
"I really appreciate you taking the time to coach and teach me......you bringing my game to new heights"

Cid:It's all good playa. But there's two things I've been meaning to tell you.

Young Grimo:Go ahead, I always listen to you.

Cid: First issue is a real baller can't be named Young Grimo

Young Grimo:Dudes from my hood gave me the name, it's who I am and how I roll man!

Cid: Listen; if we're going to reinvent your game, we gotta reinvent your game and show people what's up. An entertainer needs an entertaining name.

Young Grimo: Aight, fair enough, what you got in mind? I'm thinking something like.....The Light Skin Assassin!!!

Cid: Funny; but naw it'll never catch on. You need a name that's recognizable that people will forget your actual real name.

Young Grimo: What you got then?

Cid: DVD son

Young Grimo: DVD?!?!? What the hell?? First off, no; and second why??

Cid: Trust me it'll catch on. The reason is simple, DVDs are the new thing now and in the next few years every body's gonna have one.

Young Grimo: And how does that relate to me?

Cid: When I'm done with you, everybody will want to be like you and try to copy you and say they roll with you. In other words; they'll want to be the next DVD!!
Young Grimo: Damn Cid; that's tight.....I d[don't know if it'll catch on but I'm cool with it...

From then on, he would be known as DVD....

DVD Got Game....... part I

I know it's been a long time since the last post; but keep in mind, with the season being on pause right now, I was lacking material. However, I got some inspiration after seeing He Got Game on saturday before the game at Qwest's house. Therefore, I will provide a remixed version of the movie starring none other then........DVD!!!
Here we go


Young Grimo ( slang for young light skin) spent all oh his early and teenage years living in Burgundy (slightly north of Downtown Montreal. He'd make it to the courts and play with the older dudes, only to be told to stay on the side because he was too young and not experienced. Young Grimo would go to tournaments with young squads and light up the courts but his teams never won. He was trapped with a bunch of talent and yet always lost. The irony here is that Tracy McGrady was his favorite player....

One day, after a crushing tournament loss, Young Grimo was distraught and was thinking about quitting basketball altogether; until one of the guys he played against stepped up to him and said:
"Kid you got game, but you not helping your team win. You need to step up your game son, if you ever need help, gimme a shout, here are my digits 514-555-0FLY, my name's Cid".
Young Grimo thought about itand made the call 2 days later:
Young Grimo:" Hi, may I speak to Cid?"
Cid: "Yeah it's me"
Young Grimo: " Yeah , it's Young...."
Cid: " I know who it is.....meet me at the Y (YMCA) dowtown in 35 minutes. CLICK"

Young Grimo then headed out to the YMCA downtown....

Next Game

Fresh off their 76-59 win against team Serbie; the SBG will look to go to a 4-3 record when they face the Cougars on Saturday December the 15th 2007 @ Polyvalente Mont-Bruno (in St-Bruno). This would be the last game prior to the Christmas break, afterwards, we will start playing once again on Saturday January the 5th. At the time of this current post, the League website shows that the Cougars have a 1-5 record. Although they have a poor record, it is not a reason to underestimate them; as seen in our game against Embuscade ( which is currently second to last in our division), they were able to get their first win of the young season against us. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to come out strong on saturday and set the tempo throughout the game in the hopes of getting a win. After compiling a couple of stats, it came to my attention that the Cougars should be a fast paced team as evidenced by the amount of points they give up per game (88.5). The formula for this game should be the same one I've been preaching all season: full court man to man defense, rebounding and trust.

Qwest interviews Shyne

Qwest: Do you feel like your role is that of a mentor to the team?

Shyne: Naw, I'm just one of the guys out there.

Qwest: What name was given to you at your job and why? Do you feel it applies with the SBG?

Shyne: The name is "Stare and Tell" because I tend to notice things and then bring them to people who seem shocked by my observations. I guess it applies somewhat with the Gorillas.

Qwest:What is your biggest fear for the SBG?

Shyne: For us to lose. Let me rephrase that; my biggest fear would be not winning the League title.

Qwest: Love the way you think. So Shyne tell me, who's your favorite rap artist as of right now?

Shyne: I'm feeling Joe Budden right now, that's my guy.

Qwest: Word, that's cool. Describe your game for me please.

Shyne: I'm a role player basically. I look to play defense, maybe score from time to time, get out in transition, make sure our scorers get their necessary touches which makes everybody happy, and score in the low post every now and then.

Qwest: Cool; what about defensively?

Shyne: I try to play lockdown defense to the best of my abilities but at times I get locked into to some bad matchups with some big guys. Every now and then I can hold my own against them, but more often than not they'll get the best of me.

Qwest: Why did you fall in love with basketball? Or if you prefer, why did you start playing?

Shyne: Damn, that's a great question, you taking me back. I moved here (to Canada) when I was 12 and was getting adapted to the lifestyle here.So in high school, my cousin(shout out DJ), Ralph and my boy Steve used to play on the school playground and since i had nothing else to do I followed them and started playing as well. But I didn't really love it though, it was just a hobby. Then I saw my other cousin Johnny (DJ's older brother) play ball and I wanted to follow in his foot steps. After high school, I was still a little unsure about it, but I had played with Superstar at the park and that was really cool. Then he decided to enroll at the same school I had picked and from then I was hooked. Qwest: Great story man. I noticed that since our game against @ Centre Etienne Desmarteau (vs Embuscade) you've slowly been giving us more offense, that game you scored a lot of points. Do you see yourself as instant offense off the bench despite the limited minutes you get?

Shyne: Naw, not at all; it's just one of those things that I happened to score a little in that span, but I'm not instant offense, that's not my role at all.

Qwest: So Shyne, who's your favorite NBA player?

Shyne: Hands down, Lebron James.

Qwest: What's your favorite NBA team and why?

Shyne: Most entertaining is Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. But my favorite team is the Cleveland Cavaliers. When I watch them play, I see a one man team, not in the sense that they just have one guy, but in the sense that Lebron is such a great leader, he is able to inspire his guys to play and get the job done even though they may not have the overall talent that other teams have; I love to see a team that always plays hard.

Qwest: Do you feel as though the Gorillas are like the Cleveland Cavaliers( when comparing NBA to Association de Basketball de Montréal)?

Shyne: Not at all; because I feel that as a team we have more talent with our respect to our league then the Cavs have with respect to the NBA.

Qwest: Nice answer. Do you feel as though the Silverback Gorillas are ready for the return of Cid?

Shyne: I think so, I mean i feel that we can use his energy especially on defense. But to me the question should be is Cid ready for the SBG? Because we now have a player-coach that gets to decided who plays when and where and I don't know if he'll be ready for that; but I'm anxious to find out.

The Silverback Gorillas hope to get off to a great start on saturday by trying to force the tempo with a swarming tough man to man defense. The SBG will be without the services of 50 and Shyne to start the game because they will appear late due to prior arrangements.

In order to be successful, the Gorillas will have to force turnovers and control the boards all the while limiting their own turnovers. If we our able to win these battles, I like our chances of getting a W on saturday.....

Gorilla Update (again)

Gorilla Update

As previously mentionned, the Silverback Gorillas will have a double header this upcoming weekend with a game on Saturday and another game on Sunday. The Gorillas currently need a win in the worst way in order to get back on track. After having lost back to back games, the SBG currently have a record of 2-3 and will be looking to get back to a .500 record. Upon consultation of the players on the team, Ralph will now have the role of "player coach" and will therefore be responsible for the susbtitutions. We hope with this approach to always have favorable matchups on the floor and also to apply more defensive pressure.

Another change we have decided to implement ( with the blessing of 50), is that Hot Rod will now be starting games instead of coming off the bench. Our hope is that this will provide us with more bench scoring and prevent our second and fourth quarter scoring droughts.

Will it work? Our hope is yes; but keep tuning in to find out
